These are maximums, not recommended bulb sizes. Always follow the rating printed on your fixture, and check the bulb maker's instructions, since some lamps need a particular kind of fixture.

Ceramic emitters and specialty bulbs
A ceramic socket does not make every heater suitable. Ceramic heat emitters, mercury vapour bulbs, and some UVB lamps have their own fixture needs, so check the bulb maker's instructions. Zoo Med makes its Wire Cage Clamp Lamp for ceramic heat emitters.

Setting it up

  1. Choose the size by the bulb you plan to run: check it fits the dome and stays at or under the wattage printed on the fixture.

  2. Fit the bulb with the lamp unplugged, and let the reflector cool before you touch or move it.

  3. Clamp it to a sturdy support above the basking spot, where it cannot slip, turn, or fall into the enclosure, or use a lamp stand. Keep the bulb, socket, and hot dome out of your animal's reach, and keep to the bulb and fixture makers' minimum distances.

  4. Check the basking temperature once the bulb has warmed up.

  5. Check the clamp, cord, and plug regularly, keep the connections away from water, and stop using the lamp if the cord, plug, or socket is damaged.

Never rest it on a PVC roof
A hot dome can damage PVC, acrylic, wood, and plastic, so never rest it on them. On a PVC enclosure, use a heat-lamp opening built for it, a screen top approved for the lamp, or a lamp stand, with the clearance the bulb and fixture makers ask for.

Questions

Which size do I need?

Start with the bulb. Pick the dome it fits, rated at or above its wattage: the 5.5 in takes up to 100 W, the 8.5 in up to 150 W, and the 10 in up to 250 W.

Does it come with a bulb?

No, the bulb is sold separately, so you can choose one for your reptile's heat or light needs.

Can I use a ceramic heat emitter?

Do not assume so because the socket is ceramic. Use a fixture approved for your emitter, such as Zoo Med's Wire Cage Clamp Lamp.

Does it give UVB?

No, the fixture gives none. Any UV comes from the bulb, and some UVB bulbs need a particular fixture.

Can it sit on a screen top?

Only if the enclosure and fixture makers allow it. Otherwise, mount it another way, such as on a lamp stand.

Can I run it on a thermostat?

Yes, with a suitable heat bulb, as long as the thermostat's way of controlling suits that bulb. Follow the instructions for both.
