A bare heat bulb or ceramic heater inside an enclosure can burn an animal badly before it moves away. The Heat Guard puts a closely spaced wire grill around the heater, which keeps snakes, geckos, lizards, and amphibians that climb high off the hot element, and protects the bulb from knocks.

What it takes

Any screw-in heat source that fits wholly inside the guard and draws 160 W or less:

  • Daytime, intense, and night basking bulbs

  • Ceramic heat emitters and carbon heat projectors

  • Mercury vapour bulbs, if the bulb's maker allows the position the guard holds it in

  • Other E26 reptile bulbs that fit

Check each bulb's length, wattage, and operating position before you buy. Choose a bulb by the basking temperature it gives in your enclosure, not by its wattage alone.

Setting it up

  1. Unplug the cord and check the bulb is 160 W or less and fits inside the guard.

  2. Undo the two Phillips screws, lower the grill, fit the bulb, and screw the grill back on.

  3. Fix the guard firmly against the top of the enclosure, over a basking spot your animal can move toward and away from. The cable has its own opening so the guard sits close to the top.

  4. Look for gaps around the guard that a small snake or gecko could squeeze into, and close them.

  5. Keep décor, plants, and misting nozzles away from the guard.

  6. Measure the basking surface and the air with reliable thermometers, and adjust.

Lower grill of the Exo Terra Heat Guard

The guard gets hot
The grill stops direct contact with the bulb, but the metal itself heats up. Set up the cage so your animal cannot rest against it for long, and let everything cool before you handle it or change a bulb.
Our advice
Run ceramic heat emitters and carbon heat projectors on a thermostat, with the probe fixed where your animal cannot move it. For a basking bulb that gives light, use a dimming thermostat, never a controller that makes the bulb flash on and off.

Questions

Do I need to buy a separate socket?

No. The ceramic socket, cord, and switch are built in.

Does it control the temperature?

No. It only stops your animal touching the heater. Use a suitable thermostat with ceramic heat emitters, carbon heat projectors, and similar heaters.

How do I change the bulb?

Unplug it and let the whole fixture cool. Remove the two Phillips screws, lower the grill, and swap the bulb without taking the guard down.
