The Max lamp puts out much more total light than the 8 W ShadeDweller, so Arcadia needs only 2.5% UVB in it to reach its target: about UVI 1.0 to 1.5 at 12 in (30 cm). The longer lamp spreads that over a wider zone, and LumenIZE lets it rise to a midday peak and fade again instead of switching straight on and off.

Who it suits

Arcadia developed the Max for captive snakes. Depending on the cage, basking distance, and target UV index, it can suit:

  • Ball pythons

  • Corn snakes

  • King snakes and milk snakes

  • Rat snakes and other colubrids

  • Garter snakes

  • Hognose snakes

  • Boas and other suitable pythons

  • Some lizards and amphibians with lower UV needs

12 in is a reference, not a rule
Arcadia's UVI target is measured at 12 in (30 cm), and 2.5% UVB does not mean a UV index of 2.5. Distance, the reflector, mesh, programmed output, and layout all change what reaches your animal, so measure with a UV meter.

Setting it up

  1. Fit the tube and mount the fixture as the instructions say, over part of the cage, leaving hides, branches, and shaded areas so your snake can move in and out of the UV. A branch or raised hide brings an animal much closer to the lamp than the floor, and ordinary glass or acrylic in the light path blocks UVB.

  2. Download the free LumenIZE app, connect to the fixture over Bluetooth, and program the day with a gradual sunrise and sunset.

  3. Measure the UV index at the basking spot and adjust height or output. Check again whenever you move the light or change its program, and allow for the UV a screen top takes out.

  4. Give heat separately. This is not a basking heat source.

  5. Replace the tube every 12 months with a 14 W ShadeDweller Max 2.5% UVB tube. A tube of the same length is not necessarily compatible.

Looking after the system
Arcadia recommends opening the LumenIZE app about once a month and using the full-power function to refresh the system. Programs are stored in the fitting with a replaceable backup battery that lasts up to about three years. It keeps the clock and programs through a power cut but does not light the lamp, and it keeps running when unplugged, so long storage shortens it.
Use its own dimming
Do not run this fixture from an external dimmer or a dimming thermostat. Program the dimming in the app, and run your heat source on its own thermostat.
Guard it if your animal can reach it
If the fixture is inside the enclosure and your animal can climb to it, fit a LampGuardPro (RALGP2) over it. Arcadia makes LampGuardPro to suit LumenIZE fixtures.

Useful with it

Questions

Why only 2.5% UVB?

Because the 14 W lamp is much brighter overall than the 8 W ShadeDweller, a lower UVB share still reaches the intended low UV index.

Can I link it to a Jungle Dawn LED bar?

Yes. A LumenIZE Jungle Dawn adds plant light and the two can follow coordinated schedules. LumenIZE link cables are sold separately, and cables from standard ProT5 fixtures are not necessarily interchangeable.

Can you fit it in a new cage?

Yes. Buy it with a new Cornel's World PVC cage and choose the installation option. We place it by species, target UV index, and cage height.

How is it different from the standard ShadeDweller Max kit?

The LumenIZE version adds Bluetooth app control and programmable dimming, so the light can ramp up and down through the day.

Is the fixture exactly 24 in long?

No. It is sold as a 24 in kit, and Arcadia lists the fixture at 23.4 in long, 2.4 in deep, and 2.3 in high. Leave extra room for the cable connections.

Can I mount it above a screen top?

Yes, but mesh cuts UV by an amount that depends on the screen. Allow for it when you choose the height, and check the UV index at the basking spot.
