UVB lets a reptile make vitamin D3 in its skin. Zoo Med says the 5% UVB of the ReptiSun 5.0 helps prevent metabolic bone disease and other health problems in diurnal reptiles.

Who it suits

Diurnal reptiles that need UVB every day, including:

  • Turtles and tortoises

  • Bearded dragons

  • Iguanas

  • Other day-active reptiles

Setting it up

  1. Fit the tube in a T8 fixture rated for it.

  2. Mount it so your reptile's basking spot is within 12 in of the tube.

  3. Keep glass and plastic out of the way, since both block UVB.

  4. Add a heat source for basking. The tube gives no heat.

  5. Note the date you first switch it on.

Our advice
UVB fades long before the tube looks dim. Write the start date on the end cap and swap the tube after a year.

Questions

Does it give off heat?

No. It gives UVB, UVA, and visible light only. Pair it with a basking lamp or other heat source.

How close does my reptile need to be?

Within 12 in of the tube for the UVB to do its job. Closer is stronger, so give your animal shade to retreat to.

How often should I replace it?

Zoo Med rates it effective for at least 12 months. Replace it yearly even if it still lights up.
