UVB lets your animal make vitamin D3 to absorb calcium, which helps prevent metabolic bone disease. UVA encourages appetite, activity, and natural behaviour. This bulb gives both, plus bright daylight, from long-lasting LED chips.

Who it suits

Keepers with smaller terrariums who want UV from a compact bulb rather than a tube fixture. Check what UV your species needs, and measure at the basking spot with a UV meter. This is the 9 W screw-in bulb, not the 10 W TerraSky UV fixture with its remote, so its specifications do not carry over.

Setting it up

  1. Unplug the fixture, then screw the bulb into one with a ceramic socket, such as the Exo Terra Compact Top, which Exo Terra recommends for it.

  2. Turn the base to point the wide UV beam down at the basking area, and leave shade elsewhere. Keep it at least 20 cm (8 in) from your animal, allowing for mesh, branches, and the closest spot it can reach. That is a minimum, not a working distance.

  3. Measure the UV index at your animal's position with a UV meter where you can.

  4. For daytime heat, add a Daylight Basking Spot or Intense Basking Spot, whichever matches your animal's temperature needs.

  5. For a 24-hour cycle, run an Infrared Basking Spot at night.

Safe use
Do not run it on a dimmer or thermostat. Keep it dry, ventilated, and clear of anything that can burn, avoid looking into it or exposing your skin to it, and switch it off before you open the enclosure for maintenance. Follow the shielding and fitting instructions in the manual.

Questions

Does it come with a fixture?

No, it is one bulb. You need a fixture with a ceramic socket if you do not already have one.

Does it give heat?

Not as a basking source. Exo Terra pairs it with its basking spots for heat, each on its own thermostat.

How long does the UVB last?

Exo Terra rates it for up to 20,000 hours, or more than four years. That is the maker's lifespan, not a promise of the right exposure in every setup, so check the UV with a meter rather than judging by brightness.

Where are the instructions?

Read Exo Terra's PT2425 North American manual before you fit it.
