One bulb does the job of a basking lamp and a UVB lamp, with a full spectrum tuned to support appetite, activity, colour, and calcium absorption through vitamin D3. Exo Terra says it helps prevent metabolic bone disease, and quotes an increased UVB penetration distance of 30 cm (12 in).

Who it suits

Reptiles that bask in strong sun and need UVB and heat from the same spot, in an enclosure big enough for the wattage you choose.

Setting it up

  1. Fit it in a fixture with a ceramic socket, such as the Exo Terra Light Dome or Wire Light, or the large Exo Terra Reptile Dome, which Exo Terra rates to 160 W and lists for the Solar Glo. It needs no separate ballast.

  2. Aim it at the basking spot.

  3. Check the basking temperature and, if you can, the UV index at the basking spot.

Ceramic sockets only
Use it only in a fixture with a ceramic socket, as Exo Terra specifies.

Questions

Do I need a ballast?

No. It is self-ballasted and screws straight into a standard ceramic socket.

Which wattage should I choose?

It depends on the size of your enclosure and the basking distance. Tell us your animal and setup and we will help.
