Exo Terra Desert Sand is real desert sand, sifted to remove impurities and to give an even grain size. The red comes from the sand itself, not a dye. The grains are rounded, which Exo Terra says makes them less likely to cause impaction than gritty sand such as play sand if some is swallowed.

What it suits

Desert and dry-biotope terrariums. It encourages digging and shallow scrapes, can be used as an egg-laying substrate, and conducts heat well, so it pairs with an under-tank heater such as the Exo Terra Heat Mat. Whether sand is right for your animal depends on its species, age, and how it feeds.

Setting it up

  1. Place hides, rocks, and other heavy décor on the floor first.

  2. Pour the sand in an even layer and fill in around the décor so it sits firm.

  3. Keep the sand dry, and give water in a dish you refresh often.

  4. Feed from a dish or with tongs to limit how much sand is swallowed with food.

Care and cleaning

Spot clean every day, taking out waste and any damp clumps, and replace the sand when it no longer cleans up.

Questions

What is the difference between the red, yellow, and black sand?

Only the colour. Red gives a warm, classic desert look, yellow a pale sandy one, and black a high-contrast display.

Can I mix it with other substrates?

Yes. Many keepers blend sand with other dry substrates to change the texture or build firmer ground, such as Stone Desert. Make sure the mix still suits your species.

Is sand safe for my animal?

It depends on the species, its age, and how it feeds. Our substrate guide covers the basics, or ask us if you are unsure.
