Outback Red gives a warm red floor.

Most desert ground is not pure sand. It is sand mixed with decomposed granite and clay, which is why deserts have firm ridges, overhangs, and rock formations. Stone Desert is that kind of natural soil, with no dyes or chemicals added. Dampen it and shape it, and once it dries it keeps its shape while your animal can still dig into it.

What it suits

Desert and savannah landscapes for species that dig and burrow. Exo Terra designs it so you can build cool, slightly humid burrows low down and warm, raised basking spots higher up, which gives your animal a range of temperatures to choose from. It conducts heat well, so it works over an Exo Terra Heat Mat.

Setting it up

  1. Lightly moisten the substrate.

  2. Shape it into hills, burrows, tunnels, and basking platforms. Press it around branches or rock to anchor heavy décor.

  3. Landscape the whole floor, or only part of it and fill the rest with loose Stone Desert or Desert Sand.

  4. Let it dry fully before adding your animal. Once dry it holds its shape and does not collapse.

Care and cleaning

Spot clean waste as you see it.

Questions

Will burrows collapse when it dries?

No. Stone Desert is made to keep its shape once dry, so tunnels and outcrops hold, while your animal can still dig new ones.

Which size do I need?

It depends on the floor area and how high you want to build. A shaped landscape uses more than a flat layer. Ask us with your enclosure size if you are unsure.
