Heat, UVB, UVA, and bright light from one bulb. The D3EVO is a 100 W self-ballasted mercury vapour lamp that Arcadia redesigned for North American power, for a steadier UV output and a longer life than older converted lamps.
UVB, UVA, visible light, and infrared heat
110 to 120 V, E26 base, no external ballast
35° beam, 4800 K
Never on a dimming, pulse, or cycling thermostat

Many older mercury vapour lamps were European 230 to 240 V designs adapted for North America. Arcadia built the D3EVO for 110 to 120 V from the start, with changes to the internal parts, glass, and ignition. In their testing, output varied between lamps by only about 11% on average, so the UV Index you read off the chart is closer to what you get.

Who it suits
Basking reptiles that use overhead heat and UVB together, where the right temperature and UV Index meet at one distance:
Bearded dragons, if the UVI and basking temperature line up in your enclosure.
Uromastyx, though they may need extra heat or UVB coverage.
Monitor lizards, though one lamp may not warm a large monitor's whole body.
Tortoises, with shade to retreat to.
It is not for every species. Shade-dwelling reptiles need a much lower UV Index.
How it works
UVB lets your reptile make vitamin D3 and absorb calcium.
UVA is part of the light many reptiles can see, and shapes how they see colour.
Visible light makes a bright daytime basking area.
Infrared-A heat warms your reptile as it basks.
Built-in ballast means it screws into an E26 ceramic holder on constant power, with nothing else to wire.
Heat and UVB come from the same bulb, so you cannot adjust one without the other. Moving the lamp changes both. It works best where one mounting distance gives the right basking temperature and the right UV Index together.
UV index by distance
Distance from lamp | UV Index |
|---|---|
9 in (22 cm) | 8.0 |
11 in (28 cm) | 6.0 |
13 in (32 cm) | 4.0 |
18 in (46 cm) | 2.0 |
26 in (65 cm) | 1.0 |
These are Arcadia's reference values, not a promise for every enclosure. Measure from the lamp to where your reptile actually basks: a raised rock puts it closer and raises the UVI. Mesh screens cut UVB, so readings below a screen will be lower. Check with a UV Index meter, such as a Solarmeter 6.5, whenever you can.
Setting it up
Use a heat-rated ceramic E26 holder rated for at least 100 W and suitable for mercury vapour lamps.
Choose a starting distance from the UV Index chart, measured to your reptile's basking height.
Plug it into constant power. An on and off timer for the daily light cycle is fine, but do not switch it on and off through the day.
Check the UV Index at the basking spot with a meter.
Check the basking surface with an infrared thermometer and the air with a digital thermometer.
If it runs too hot, move the lamp or change the setup. Never use a dimmer to correct it.
Give your reptile shade and a cool side to move away from both heat and UVB.

Questions
Does it need an external ballast?
No. The ballast is built in.
Can I put it on a dimming thermostat?
No. Dimming, pulse, and cycling thermostats must not be used with it. Use a timer for the day cycle.
How far should it be from my reptile?
It depends on the UV Index your species needs. Arcadia lists UVI 4.0 at about 13 in and UVI 2.0 at about 18 in. Start from the chart and check with a meter.
Will it work through a screen top?
A screen cuts some UVB, so the chart will read high. Measure the UV Index under the screen at the basking spot.
How long does it last?
Arcadia rates it at 5,000 hours, with UV output stable for up to a year. Check it with a UV Index meter.
Can I use it at night?
No. It gives bright light, so it is for daytime only. Use a heat source that gives no light at night.
Is it better than separate heat and UVB lamps?
It depends on your enclosure. One bulb is simpler, but separate heat and UVB fixtures let you adjust each on its own.
