For many keepers, a basic glass tank is where the journey starts, but it doesn't have to be where it ends. This upgrade is a perfect example of how a custom build can transform both the look of a home and the quality of life for the animal.
In early 2021, the homeowners reached out while planning a major kitchen renovation. Their goal was simple: replace their monitor's bare glass enclosure with a naturalistic, high-end habitat that would become a showpiece in the new space. Our job was to engineer an enclosure that delivered on husbandry, durability, and design.

Site visit and measuring
We started with a site measure in Drumheller in January 2021. At the time, the monitor was living in a standard glass enclosure. It offered basic floor space, but little in the way of height, structure, or environmental complexity, especially for an active, intelligent monitor species.
Because the kitchen walls were already being opened up, we had the perfect chance to design a built-in enclosure that would integrate with the new cabinetry and electrical work. We documented dimensions, access points, and service clearances so the finished habitat would look like it was always meant to be there.
From there, we went back to the shop to design a PVC and Zoopoxy enclosure that would deliver proper heat and UVB gradients, usable vertical space, and visual impact worthy of a full kitchen renovation.
Rendering it into the kitchen wall
Before we started carving foam or mixing Zoopoxy, we built a rendering of how the terrarium would fit into the new cabinetry. That let the contractor, electrician, and homeowners coordinate framing, venting, and access while the renovation was still in progress.
Locking in the footprint and cabinet alignment early meant we could focus on what we do best: engineering an enclosure that works like a slice of wild habitat, not just a box with lights.
Rockwork, pool, and climbing layout
Blue-tailed monitors are athletic, inquisitive lizards that thrive in complex environments. To support natural behaviour, we created a hand-sculpted Zoopoxy background with ledges, crevices, and vertical structure. The design offers:
Multiple basking platforms at different heights
Rough textures for traction and claw health
A built-in pool for soaking and humidity
Branches for climbing and patrolling
Because Zoopoxy cures into a tough, sealed surface, it is ideal for a large monitor enclosure, resisting scratches, moisture, and daily wear from an active animal.
Lighting, heat, and misting
No expense was spared on equipment. For a species like this, the right hardware is non-negotiable, so we outfitted the build with a full Arcadia lighting package, Deep Heat Projectors, and a MistKing misting system.
UVB and LED lighting
Arcadia UV fluorescent lighting for strong, reliable UVB and long-term skeletal and metabolic health
Arcadia Jungle Dawn LED for bright, full-spectrum visible light that makes the enclosure feel like daylight
Arcadia dome lights to safely house halogen and deep heat bulbs above the basking zones
Halogen and deep heat
The basking and ambient heat plan combined:
Halogen basking lamps for intense, focused heat and natural-looking light
Deep Heat Projectors for deep-penetrating infrared that warms the monitor the way real sunlight would
Misting
To maintain humidity and support proper shedding, we integrated a MistKing misting system. Automated misting cycles keep the enclosure from drying out completely while still letting surfaces cycle between wet and dry, just like a natural environment.

Better welfare, better looks
This project completely changed life for the monitor. Instead of a simple glass tank, it now lives in a large custom enclosure with realistic rockwork, proper UVB and heat gradients, humidity control, and far more usable space.
For the homeowners, the habitat is a living feature wall in the kitchen, something guests notice immediately and remember long after they leave. For us, it's a showcase of what thoughtful, science-based design can do for reptiles and the people who keep them.
Whether you keep a blue-tailed monitor, another monitor species, or any large reptile, a properly designed enclosure makes all the difference. We build custom reptile enclosures in Alberta and across North America, using quality materials, proven equipment, and over three decades of reptile-keeping experience.
