The largest of Exo Terra's self-regulating heat mats, for 50 to 60 gallon glass terrariums. It warms through the glass from outside with no light, and turns its own output down as it heats.

How it heats
Conductive heat passes through the glass to make a local warm area, so your animal can move between warm and cool.
Self-regulating PTC (positive temperature coefficient): as the element warms, its resistance rises and it draws less power, so it heats up fast and then eases off on its own.
Carbon fibre spreads the heat more evenly than older resistance-wire mats, with fewer hot spots.
No light, so it can run day or night without upsetting your lighting schedule.
Many reptiles warm themselves on sun-heated rocks and soil, and a heat mat gives them a surface like that. Basking species still need an overhead heat source and UVB. For amphibians, watch temperature and humidity closely, and for burrowing invertebrates a side mount may suit better.
Choosing a size
Model | Wattage | Heating surface | Recommended terrarium |
|---|---|---|---|
PT2031 | 4 W | 7 x 4 in (18 x 10 cm) | 1 to 5 gal |
PT2032 | 8 W | 8 x 6 in (20 x 15 cm) | 10 to 20 gal |
PT2033 | 16 W | 12 x 8 in (30 x 20 cm) | 30 to 40 gal |
PT2034 | 24 W | 18 x 8 in (45 x 20 cm) | 50 to 60 gal |
Tank volume is only a starting point. Room temperature, ventilation, and your animal's needs matter as much.
Setting it up
Pick the spot on the outside of the glass, under or on the side, and leave plenty of the floor unheated. The adhesive is permanent, so be sure before you peel the backing.
Clean and dry the glass.
Press the mat on so the whole heating surface touches the glass.
Use the rubber spacers to keep a gap between the terrarium and the surface it sits on, so heat is not trapped underneath.
Connect a thermostat and place its probe as the thermostat and mat instructions advise.
Let it settle, then check the warm and cool sides with a separate thermometer before your animal goes in.
Safety
Self-regulating does not mean it cannot overheat. Poor mounting or trapped heat can still cause problems, and the PTC element cannot hold a set enclosure temperature on its own, which is why a thermostat is recommended.

Questions
Can it replace a basking lamp?
Not for most reptiles. Species that bask need overhead heat, and many need UVB too. A heat mat can be the main heat for some non-basking species, or extra warmth for others.
Can I move it later?
No. The adhesive makes a permanent bond, so choose the spot carefully.
Which thermostat works with it?
Exo Terra says it works with its own thermostats, such as the Exo Terra 300 W dimming and pulse thermostat.
Is substrate depth a factor?
Yes. Substrate depth affects how well it heats, along with the room temperature, ventilation, and your animal's needs, so check the surface your animal sits on.
