In the early days of Cornel's World, before TV shows and massive expo builds, one project changed everything for us: a full wall of custom enclosures for the Petaluma Wildlife & Natural Science Museum in Petaluma, California.
This wasn't a simple home setup or a one-off custom tank. It was our very first large-scale institutional project, for a student-run museum where the animals are part of the curriculum and the conservation education program.
From day one, we knew we couldn't cut corners. These builds had to look incredible on the public side, work perfectly behind the scenes, and stand up to daily use by staff and students.

A student-run museum with a big mission
The Petaluma Wildlife & Natural Science Museum is a unique place. It's one of the only student-operated natural history museums in the United States, giving high school students hands-on experience with animal care, education, and conservation.
For us, that meant the stakes were higher than "make it look cool." These displays needed to:
Support real animals with proper heat, UV, humidity, and ventilation
Be safe and serviceable for students and staff working behind the scenes
Give visitors an uncluttered, immersive view from the front
Front-view displays, back-end access
The core design idea was simple but powerful: all servicing from the back, all viewing from the front.
From the visitor side, you see a clean wall of beautifully lit enclosures with large fixed front glass panels: no hinges, no clutter, and no exposed hardware. From the staff side, there is full access to every enclosure for feeding, cleaning, maintenance, and training students.
This approach lets the museum team:
Keep exhibits open to the public even during maintenance
Teach students animal care in a safe, controlled working corridor
Hide all the back-of-house equipment, like misting lines, thermostats, and wiring
No expense spared on hardware
For this project, we didn't hold back on lighting, heating, or misting. The museum wanted systems that would perform reliably and give each animal the environment it needed, so we specced the builds with some of the best equipment available.
Why this build was a milestone
This project marked a turning point for us. It showed that we could deliver high-spec, commercial-grade habitats for institutions, not just hobbyists. That helped us grow our reputation, expand our portfolio, and earn the trust of larger clients.
It also matched our brand values: Quality. Innovation. Customizable. Educational. We weren't just building habitats. We were creating environments where animals thrive, visitors are captivated, and learning happens.
The impact
Because of builds like these, the museum showcases exhibits that run reliably, look outstanding, and support its educational mission. Visitors engage with the animals and their environments, while staff benefit from efficient back-of-house access and fewer disruptions.
For Cornel's World, the project created momentum, leading to bigger builds, more ambitious clients, and a stronger presence in commercial and institutional habitat design.
Final thoughts
Looking back at the Petaluma build, what stands out most is the blend of aesthetics, technology, and craftsmanship. It wasn't enough to create something that looked impressive. We built habitats that work, endure, and inspire.
A huge thank-you to the PWM team for trusting us with your first major display project. It was the start of something big.
Plan a custom build
Considering a museum-quality habitat, a front-of-house display, or a custom enclosure for education or public exhibition? We'd love to help bring your vision to life.
