Aspen has none of the aromatic oils of cedar. Zoo Med heat-treats these chips, and the bag is free of slivers, shavings, and foreign material. The chunk size lets snakes and lizards dig and move through the surface.

What it suits

  • Desert lizards such as bearded dragons, uromastyx, geckos, and desert skinks

  • Snakes such as corn, rat, and king snakes, boas, and pythons, kept in drier setups

It is made for dry enclosures. For tropical species, choose a substrate that holds moisture, such as Forest Floor.

Setting it up

  1. Add a layer 2 to 5 cm deep, or deeper for animals that burrow.

  2. Add hides, branches, and clutter, and rake the surface now and then to freshen it.

Care and cleaning

Spot clean clumps and soiled patches as you see them, and change the whole bed on a routine that suits the enclosure size and how many animals share it.
