A clay burrowing substrate you shape while it is damp. Once it dries, the tunnels, ledges, and terraces you built keep their shape, so burrowing reptiles can dig without the walls caving in.

  • Mouldable when damp, sets firm when dry

  • All natural, with no added dyes, colours, or chemicals

  • For desert and burrowing species

  • 10 lb and 20 lb bags, or a Cavern Kit with 12 lb of clay

Most loose substrates fall in as soon as an animal digs into them. Excavator is a natural clay you moisten, sculpt into tunnels, caves, ramps, and terraces, and leave to dry. Once it sets, the features stay put, which makes multi-level arid displays possible.

What it suits

It is made for desert species that dig and burrow:

  • Bearded dragons

  • Uromastyx

  • Leopard geckos

  • Skinks

  • Small burrowing snakes

What's in the Cavern Kit

The kit gives you the forms to make caves and tunnels rather than carving them by hand.

  • 12 lb of Excavator clay

  • 7 in tunnel tube

  • Two 5 in round balloons and two 9 in round balloons

  • Balloon attachment assembly

  • 10 in shovel

  • Mixing bag

  • Full installation booklet

Setting it up

  1. Pour the clay into the enclosure and moisten it lightly.

  2. Shape tunnels, terraces, ramps, and hides while it is damp.

  3. Let it dry fully so the features hold before your animal goes in.

You can layer it with other substrates, such as sand or soil mixes, for a different texture or more humidity where your species needs it.

Care and cleaning

Spot clean, and replace sections once they are heavily soiled.

Our advice
Give your animal a flat feeding area, such as a dish or a smooth patch of floor, so it is less likely to swallow substrate with its food.

Questions

How much do I need?

It depends on the floor area and how deep you build. A 10 lb or 20 lb bag covers a typical 10 to 40 gallon setup, and deep burrows take more.

Do the tunnels really hold up?

Yes, once the clay has dried. Size each burrow for your animal, and support the larger ones.

Is it right for my animal?

Read our guide to choosing a substrate, or ask us with your species and enclosure size.
