Zoo Med Creature Soil substrate for tarantulas and insects

Zoo Med Creature Soil is a loose substrate blend for spiders, insects, and other invertebrates. It combines peat moss, soil, sand, and carbon for a natural-looking habitat floor.

Each bag holds 1 dry quart. The blend supports burrowing, helps hold moisture, and gives live plants something to grow in.

What it suits

  • Intended use: spiders, tarantulas included, insects, and other invertebrates.

  • Moisture: helps hold humidity when you manage moisture to suit your species.

  • Natural behaviour: gives them a medium to burrow in.

  • Planted habitats: works with live plants.

How far one bag goes

A 1 dry quart bag suits small acrylic invertebrate enclosures, nano terrariums, and topping up substrate. For example, one bag gives about 1 in of substrate across an 8 x 8 in floor.

Depth from one bag (about)

6 x 6 in

1.9 in

8 x 8 in

1 in

12 x 12 in

0.5 in

These are worked-out estimates before the soil compacts and settles, so allow extra when you need a set finished depth. Choose the depth for your animal's needs rather than spreading one bag thinly across a larger enclosure.

Best uses for the 1 quart bag

  • Small acrylic habitats for suitable spiders, insects, and other invertebrates.

  • Small grow-out enclosures at the right substrate depth for the species.

  • Nano terrariums and miniature planted habitats.

  • Topping up or replacing small amounts of existing substrate.

Filling a larger enclosure?

For a large habitat, such as a 4 x 2 ft enclosure, a substrate in a larger bag is better value. Burrowing invertebrates may also need much more substrate than one small bag gives.

Setting it up

  1. Prepare the habitat and check the substrate needs of your species.

  2. Add enough soil to reach the right depth.

  3. Adjust the moisture as needed, then arrange hides, plants, and décor.

  4. Watch conditions and remove waste and leftover food as part of routine care.

Questions

What size is this bag?

Each bag holds 1 dry quart of Zoo Med Creature Soil. That is a measure of volume, not weight.

Can I use it for tarantulas?

Zoo Med lists tarantulas among its intended uses. Choose the depth and moisture for your particular species.

Can I add live plants?

Yes. Creature Soil works with live plants. Allow enough depth for the plants you choose.

Will one bag fill my enclosure?

It depends on floor area and depth. Larger habitats and deeper burrowing setups may need several bags.

Can you help me choose a substrate?

Yes. Contact Cornel's World with your species, enclosure size, and planned substrate depth, and we can help you weigh the options.
