Repashy SuperFly fruit fly culturing kit with media, cups, lids, and excelsior

Setting up a culture

  1. Add 1/4 cup of SuperFly media to a clean 32 oz cup.

  2. Pour in about 2/3 cup of hot water and stir until it is even.

  3. Leave it for several hours to absorb the water, cool, and thicken. Adjust with a little water or dry media.

  4. Once cool, add excelsior for climbing and pupating.

  5. Add your starter flies and press on the lid.

  6. Keep the culture somewhere steady, near 75 °F.

Let it cool first
Never add flies to hot media. Wait until it has cooled before adding excelsior and flies.

What to expect

  • Larvae in about 5 to 7 days.

  • Adult flies from about 10 to 15 days.

  • Temperature near 75 °F. Warmer speeds things up, but too much heat can crash a culture, so keep it out of direct sun and away from heaters.

  • Water: distilled or bottled where you can.

To keep cultures healthy:

  • Use clean cups and tools for each new culture.

  • Do not let the media get too wet.

  • Keep them out of direct sun, away from extreme heat or cold, and where air moves steadily.

  • Throw out any culture that grows unusual mould or smells strongly.

Our advice
Start a new culture every few days and keep more than you think you need. With cultures at different stages, one crash never leaves you without feeders.

About SuperFly media

Repashy made SuperFly for drosophila. It mixes with hot water, needs no added active yeast, and carries vitamins, minerals, trace elements, and carotenoids that pass on to the flies you feed. Not for human consumption.

Fruit flies suit animals too small for crickets or roaches: dart frogs, mourning geckos, hatchling geckos, small day geckos, baby anoles, praying mantids, jumping spiders, small frogs and toads, and other small insectivores. Melanogaster are the smaller flies and hydei the larger, so pick the one that suits your animal, and dust the flies with a supplement when your animal's feeding plan calls for it.

Questions

Are starter flies included?

No. Add starter flies, such as our live fruit fly cultures, which you can pick up in store or have shipped overnight by quote.

Do I need to add yeast?

No. SuperFly works without added active yeast.

Which kit should I choose?

The 6 oz kit for a small collection or a first try, the 17.6 oz kit for regular feeding, and the 6.6 lb kit for breeders and heavy use.
