  • 10 x 25 to 30 x 45 cm
  • Natural Mopani wood
  • Aquarium or terrarium
  • Each piece unique

Mopani has a bold grain and a distinctive shape, so one piece gives a display a strong focal point and makes a habitat look less artificial. It works as a main décor piece or as part of a larger naturalistic display.

Medium

20 x 35 cm (7.8 x 13.8 in)

Large

30 x 45 cm (11.8 x 17.7 in)

Preparing it for water

  1. Rinse the whole piece in clean water to remove loose material and debris.

  2. For an aquarium, soak it first if you like, to draw out some of the tannins.

  3. Change the soak water as needed. Repeated changes reduce the visible staining.

  4. Position the wood securely in your aquarium, terrarium, or planted display.

Using it in your enclosure

  • Aquariums: a natural focal point, cover and shelter for fish, and a base for aquatic plants and moss.

  • Terrariums: a climbing feature or hiding area with suitable reptiles, amphibians, and plants, in naturalistic and bioactive builds.

  • Planted displays: a natural-looking hardscape piece for live plants and moss.

Every piece is different
This is natural wood, so shape, thickness, and branching vary from piece to piece. The sizes are approximate, and grain and colour vary too, so your piece will differ from the photos.
Tannins in aquarium water
Mopani can keep releasing natural tannins after it goes in, which can turn aquarium water light brown. Some keepers like the look. For clearer water, pre-soak the wood and change the soak water regularly, and run aquarium carbon to remove tannins.

Questions

Can I boil it?

If the piece fits your pot, boiling helps remove loose material and some tannins, though the wood may still release tannins afterward.
