Plantation Soil is ground coconut husk fibre, sometimes called coco coir. The fibre takes up moisture and releases it slowly, which keeps air humidity steady and helps with shedding. It is biodegradable and can go in the compost after use.

What it suits

  • Tropical reptiles and amphibians, such as frogs, salamanders, geckos, and many snakes

  • Burrowing reptiles and invertebrates

  • Planted and bioactive enclosures, over a drainage layer

One brick covers a small enclosure or tops up an existing bed. The 3-pack is for a full setup or a deeper layer for burrowers.

Setting it up

  1. Put a brick in a 10 L (2.6 gal) bucket and add about 3 L (100 fl oz) of water.

  2. Let it soak for about 30 minutes, until no dry clumps remain.

  3. Stir to break up any packed areas.

  4. Spread a 2 to 4 in (5 to 10 cm) layer in the enclosure. Mix in leaf litter or moss if you like.

  5. Mist or water to the humidity your animal needs, and check it with a hygrometer.

Care and cleaning

Spot clean every day and refresh or replace the bed when it gets soiled.
