- 10 lb (4.5 kg)
Exo Terra Desert Sand is real desert sand, sifted for an even grain size, with no dyes or chemicals added. The black is natural. Exo Terra describes the grains as evenly rounded quartz, which it says makes them less likely to cause impaction than gritty sand if some is swallowed.

What it suits
Arid and semi-arid terrariums where you want a clean, simple look. It encourages digging and shallow scrapes, can be used as an egg-laying substrate, and works over an under-tank heater such as the Exo Terra Heat Mat. Whether sand suits your animal depends on its species, age, and how it feeds.
Setting it up
Place hides, rocks, and other heavy décor on the floor first.
Pour the sand in an even layer and fill in around the décor so it sits firm.
Keep the sand dry, and give water in a dish you refresh often.
Feed from a dish or with tongs to limit how much sand is swallowed with food.
Care and cleaning
Spot clean every day, taking out waste and any damp clumps, and replace the sand when it no longer cleans up.

Questions
How do I keep sand cleaner between changes?
Spot clean daily, take out wet clumps right away, and keep water spills contained. Feeding from a dish, or in a separate container, cuts down on mess.
Is sand always the safest option?
Not always. If your animal is young, a messy feeder, or grabs food off the ground, feed from a dish or with tongs, or ask us about other substrates. Our substrate guide covers the choices.
