The leaves work in a terrarium and in water:

Humidity: the leaves hold moisture in tropical enclosures.
Microhabitats: hiding and foraging spots for insects, amphibians, and other small animals.
Forest-floor look: the leaves make a bioactive setup look natural.
Tannins: in water they slowly release tannins that lower pH and soften it, as in Amazonian and Southeast Asian biotopes.
Biofilm: the leaf surfaces grow biofilm, a food for shrimp and some fish.
Shelter: cover for fish, shrimp, and invertebrates.
