Indian almond leaves are also sold as ketapang or catappa leaves. Aquarists have used them for years, and they do a similar job in a tropical bioactive terrarium.

As the leaves break down they add nutrients back into the soil. Your isopods use them for shelter and as a second food source.

Using it in water

Placed in water, the leaves release tannins and other compounds, so expect the water to tint brown. NewCal says they:

  • Lower the pH

  • Help fish recover from wounds or disease

  • Inhibit many types of bacteria and fungus

  • Encourage breeding

  • Give natural hiding spots for extra security
