Isopods and millipedes need a substrate that holds moisture, gives cover, and is itself food. This mix is all three, with fine charcoal and both calcium fines and larger calcium pieces for growth and breeding.

Moist, not wet, with a moisture gradient

What it suits

  • Stand-alone isopod and millipede cultures

  • Cleanup crew breeding bins

  • As part of the substrate in a bioactive reptile or amphibian enclosure

What it's made of

  • Hardwood fines, leaf debris, and compost are food and burrowing material.

  • Sphagnum moss holds moisture.

  • Fine charcoal is part of the fortified blend.

  • Calcium fines and larger calcium pieces support growth and breeding.

Setting it up

  1. Spread a 2 to 3 in layer across the bin or enclosure.

  2. Mist it lightly until moist, not wet.

  3. Keep one side slightly wetter to make a moisture gradient.

  4. Add leaf litter, cork bark, or wood for cover and food.

  5. Check humidity regularly and adjust.

Our advice
Always keep a moisture gradient. A slightly drier side helps prevent mould and lets the colony choose its conditions.

Questions

Can it be the main substrate for isopods?

Yes. It is made as the main substrate for isopod and millipede cultures, or as part of a bioactive setup.

How deep should it be?

2 to 3 in suits most cultures and enclosures.

Do I still need leaf litter?

Yes. Extra leaf litter gives longer-lasting food and cover.

Should it stay wet?

No. Keep it moist but never waterlogged.
