Universal Rocks created the Ledge style using natural rock ledges from Australia as inspiration. As a result, the finished background provides a convincing rock formation instead of the flat appearance of a printed backdrop.

How Far Do the Ledges Project?

On the smaller Universal Rocks Ledge backgrounds, the rock formations project approximately 2″ to 4″ into the enclosure. Therefore, allow enough front-to-back space for the background as well as your animal, substrate and other décor.

Recommended Uses

Reptile Enclosures

The Ledge background turns the rear wall into part of the usable habitat. For example, suitable reptiles can use the projecting rock surfaces for climbing, resting and basking. At the same time, the areas underneath the ledges provide additional cover.

Aquarium Displays

In an aquarium, the projecting rock formations create depth and sheltered areas. Fish can hide beneath the ledges and explore the added structure. In addition, the textured rock surface creates a more natural-looking backdrop.

Smaller Naturalistic Displays

Planning Your Installation

Measure the Inside of the Enclosure

First, measure the actual interior width and height of your enclosure. Wall thickness, trim and framing can reduce the usable interior dimensions, so do not rely only on the enclosure’s advertised outside size.

Allow for the 3D Ledges

Next, check the enclosure depth. The ledges on the smaller backgrounds can extend approximately 2″ to 4″ forward. Therefore, make sure enough usable space remains after the background is installed.

Test Fit Before Securing

Finally, test-fit the background before permanently securing it. This allows you to check its position, available clearance and the placement of heating, lighting, branches and other enclosure equipment.
