Best Bearded Dragon PVC Cage Setup
Choosing the right enclosure is one of the most important decisions you can make for a bearded dragon. A properly designed PVC cage gives you better heat control, better long-term durability, excellent visibility, and the ability to build a naturalistic habitat that supports healthy behaviour.

What Size Cage Does a Bearded Dragon Need?
For adult bearded dragons, our most popular enclosure size is the 4x2x2 PVC Reptile Enclosure. A full 4x2x2 enclosure is often referred to as roughly equivalent to a 120 gallon enclosure by volume.
Our standard Cornel's World 4x2x2 enclosure measures approximately 46" wide x 22" deep x 22 3/4" tall. This size is optimized to fit standard shipping boxes with 1" Styrofoam protection around the enclosure, helping reduce shipping damage while still providing excellent usable space.
While slightly smaller than a true 48" x 24" x 24" enclosure, the actual volume is still approximately 100 gallons, which is an appropriate size for an adult bearded dragon.
Although this size can physically accommodate up to two adult dragons, bearded dragons should generally not be housed together except in carefully monitored breeding situations.
Why PVC Is a Great Choice for Bearded Dragons
Bearded dragons need a strong basking area, a cooler retreat zone, proper UVB exposure, and enough space to move, climb, dig, and thermoregulate. PVC enclosures are ideal because they insulate better than glass and allow heat and lighting to be positioned more effectively.
Better Heat Control
PVC helps retain heat more efficiently than glass, making it easier to create a stable basking zone and cooler side.
Long-Term Durability
PVC will not swell, rot, or break down like wood-based materials can when exposed to moisture or repeated cleaning.
Customizable Design
Options like litter dam height, glass litter dams, door styles, and screen tops allow you to customize the cage to your setup.
Litter Dam Options
The litter dam is the front lower section of the enclosure that helps hold substrate inside the cage. For bearded dragons, this is especially important if you prefer a naturalistic sandy substrate.
3" Standard PVC Litter Dam
The standard 3" PVC litter dam works well for many basic setups and provides good front visibility while still holding a moderate amount of substrate.

6" PVC Litter Dam
The 6" PVC litter dam increases substrate depth by 3", making it a better option for deeper naturalistic setups. The tradeoff is that it reduces the glass opening height.

Glass Litter Dam
Our glass litter dam is one of the best upgrades for display-style bearded dragon enclosures. It adds approximately 4" of additional viewable glass area and makes the enclosure feel much more open from the front.

Solid Top vs Screen Top
For most bearded dragon setups, we recommend a solid-top PVC enclosure. A solid top makes it easier to control heat, mount lighting securely, and create a proper basking gradient.
We also offer screen tops for customers who want to use existing dome fixtures or lighting from a previous enclosure. Screen tops increase airflow, which can be helpful if humidity is a concern, but they also make heating more difficult.
If choosing a screen top, you may need to increase bulb wattage and carefully verify UVB output. Metal screen can reduce UVB reaching the reptile, so distance from the bulb and screen interference both need to be considered.
Door Options
Sliding Glass Doors
Sliding glass is our favourite option for bearded dragons. Glass is harder than plexiglass and resists scratching better, which is especially important for lizards with nails.
Sliding doors also only open halfway at a time, which can help reduce escape risk. They are fully removable, making deep cleaning much easier.
Plexiglass Door Options
We also offer hinged swing-down plexiglass doors, double swing-down plexiglass doors, and side-hinged plexiglass doors. These can provide wider access, but the glass litter dam option is not available with plexiglass doors because the hinges require front framing.
Recommended UVB Lighting
For a solid-top PVC bearded dragon cage, we recommend the Arcadia PRO T5 UVB Kit 24" Fixture with 12% UVB.
A 24" fixture gives strong UVB coverage without exposing the entire enclosure to full UVB at all times. This allows your bearded dragon to move in and out of the UVB zone naturally.
We also offer the Arcadia LumenIZE Pro T5 UVB Kit, which adds app control, built-in timer functions, and the ability to simulate sunrise and sunset for a more natural light cycle.

Recommended Basking Setup
For most 4x2x2 PVC bearded dragon enclosures, one basking fixture is usually enough unless the room is unusually cool or drafty. Bearded dragons can naturally tolerate cooler nighttime temperatures, and most homes do not require extra nighttime heat.
For the fixture, we recommend the Arcadia D3 Ceramic Pro Lamp Bracket Set with Switch. This mounts securely to the ceiling of the enclosure with four screws.
For most bearded dragon setups, we do not find a heat lamp cage necessary. When designing the enclosure, we recommend positioning branches, basking platforms, and décor so the dragon cannot physically reach the bulb. This approach allows proper basking temperatures while preventing accidental contact with the fixture. In enclosures where the reptile may have direct access to the bulb or fixture, a heat lamp cage can provide additional protection.
For the basking bulb, we recommend the Arcadia 50W Halogen Heat Basking Lamp in most enclosed PVC setups. Installed on one side of the cage, it creates an excellent basking area while allowing a cooler gradient on the opposite side.

Use a Temperature Gun
One of the most useful tools for bearded dragon husbandry is a digital infrared temperature gun.
Fixed sensors are helpful, but they only measure one location. A temperature gun lets you check the basking surface, warm side, cool side, hides, branches, rocks, and multiple areas throughout the enclosure.
Being able to measure multiple zones gives you a much better understanding of the actual environment your dragon is using. We recommend the ReptiZoo Digital Infrared Thermometer.

Substrate Options
Substrate is one of the most debated topics in bearded dragon care.
Some keepers prefer solid surfaces such as tile, paper towel, or liner. Our preference is a more naturalistic setup using sand or sandy substrate blends.
When a bearded dragon is properly hydrated, receiving proper UVB, maintained at correct temperatures, and fed a balanced diet, impaction should not normally be an issue. In many cases, impaction is secondary to an underlying husbandry problem rather than simply the use of loose substrate.
Naturalistic substrate also allows digging behaviour and creates a more enriching enclosure.
Save Money with a Complete Kit
For our most popular enclosure sizes, we offer complete kits that save money when adding recommended items to your cage order.
Our 4x2x2 PVC Lizard Enclosure Kit is a great option for bearded dragons and other lizards. It combines the cage with commonly recommended setup items, helping reduce guesswork while saving compared to purchasing items separately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 4x2x2 cage big enough for a bearded dragon?
Yes. A 4x2x2 style enclosure is one of the most common recommended sizes for an adult bearded dragon. Our standard version provides approximately 100 gallons of usable volume.
Can two bearded dragons live in one 4x2x2 enclosure?
They may physically fit, but we generally do not recommend housing adult bearded dragons together except for monitored breeding situations.
Is PVC better than glass for bearded dragons?
In many cases, yes. PVC offers better insulation, easier internal lighting installation, better heat stability, and more customization options than a standard glass aquarium.
Should I choose a solid top or screen top?
A solid top is generally easier for heating and lighting control. Screen tops can work, especially if you already have external lighting, but you may need higher wattage bulbs and must account for reduced UVB through metal screen.
Do I need a thermostat for a bearded dragon basking bulb?
Thermostats can be used, but they are not always ideal with visible-light basking bulbs. When used with halogen lighting, a thermostat may cause the light level to constantly dim, fluctuate, or turn on and off, which can reduce bulb lifespan and create a less natural lighting cycle.
For basking lights, we generally recommend choosing the correct bulb wattage and fixture placement to achieve the proper temperatures. Thermostats are more commonly used with non-light-emitting heat sources.
What basking bulb should I use?
In most solid-top 4x2x2 PVC bearded dragon enclosures, we recommend a 50W Arcadia halogen basking bulb. Room temperature, décor height, and fixture placement can affect the final result, so always verify temperatures.
Do I need a temperature gun?
Yes, a temperature gun is one of the best tools for fine-tuning a bearded dragon setup. It allows you to check multiple surfaces and temperature zones throughout the enclosure instead of relying on a single fixed sensor.
Can bearded dragons be kept on sand?
Yes, when overall husbandry is correct. Proper hydration, UVB, nutrition, and basking temperatures are all important. Impaction is often related to underlying husbandry problems rather than substrate alone.
